All Dried Up

Keeping a supply of dried fruits & vegetables in your home is an excellent idea.dried-produce

Dehydrated fruits & vegetables are still high in nutritional content (higher in calories, though, for humans who count!) but lack the water content necessary for gliders, which is why they are not recommended as a replacement for the fresh fruits or veggies in their daily diet.  However, they are fantastic for bedtime and nail trim treats, and as a supplement to the usual yoggie or mealworm treat we often feed.

When you are looking for dried produce in your local grocery, read the label.  You’ll notice that some manufacturers add sugars and other fillers or preservatives, which is not optimal for our gliders.  Instead, look for those that are all-natural, with no additives.

The down side of dried produce in the grocery store is the cost.  They are often expensive.   Want to beat that cost?  For $20, you can purchase your own dehydrator and make your own!  It’ll pay for itself in no time!  Simply purchase your fruits and vegetables and dry them at home!   Drying times will vary, depending on the dehydrator you purchase, so read the instructions on the manufacturers recommended dry time.

Following is a list of just some of the fruits and vegetables we dry here in our home:

  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Bell Peppers
  • Sweet Potato
  • Zucchini
  • Cherries
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Kiwi
  • Strawberries
  • Raisins
  • Papaya
  • Dates
  • Pineapple
  • Green Beans

Expand your horizons and try something new!  You’ll save money, you can eat them yourself AND help to ensure a healthy lifestyle for you AND your glider 🙂
